RPE Workout Planner: How to Use RPE 7, 8, 9, and 10

Load and reps tell you what happened. RPE adds how hard that set felt. Together they help distinguish a clean completed set from one that reached the edge of today’s capacity.

RPE Workout Planner

In resistance training, RPE is commonly linked to estimated reps in reserve: RPE 10 means no rep remains, RPE 9 about one, RPE 8 about two, and RPE 7 about three. Use it with actual load, reps, technique, completion, and recent trends. A single RPE estimate is useful context, not an automatic command to add weight.

01

Translate RPE into an actionable range

RPE 7–8 is often useful for repeatable working sets, while RPE 9 leaves very little margin and RPE 10 represents a maximal set. The appropriate target depends on the movement, goal, experience, and point in the training cycle.

Newer lifters often estimate reps in reserve less accurately. Use the scale consistently, then compare it with whether the next rep was actually available and whether technique changed.

02

Use completion and RPE together

If every target rep is completed and the final set stays below the target RPE, a small progression may fit. If the target is completed at a very high RPE, holding the load may be more useful. Missing reps across several sessions calls for a review of load, rest, recovery, and technique.

  • Target completed, RPE lower than planned: consider a small progression
  • Target completed, RPE at the top of range: hold and confirm
  • Target missed once: inspect rest, setup, and daily context
  • Target missed repeatedly: reduce or revise the plan
03

Keep control of the plan

Lenjo can combine RPE with completed reps, load, recent sessions, and recovery context to explain a suggested adjustment. You still review the plan and confirm the real set values.

RPE is not a medical signal and cannot diagnose pain or injury. Stop the relevant movement and seek qualified help for unusual pain or symptoms.

FAQ

Common questions

01Is RPE 10 required for muscle growth?

No. Productive training can include sets that stop short of failure. The appropriate effort depends on the exercise, volume, goal, and ability to recover.

02Should I record RPE for every set?

You can begin with the final or hardest working set on major movements, then add more detail once the habit is stable.

03Can Lenjo add weight automatically from RPE?

Lenjo can suggest a change using RPE and completion history, but the plan and actual load remain reviewable and confirmed by you.
